    Question Looking for info-Uniforms

    Hello all,

I am looking for any contractual language on stationwear. If anybody has some info I would appreciate it. ie: FFR, 100% cotton etc... also how language came about, was it safety committee? union? or administrative?

    Thanks for your time.

Our contract language just says that the Fire Department will provide all employees with appropriate garments for the work to be undertaken in conjunction with the safety committee.

Right now our safety committee has ruled that all station-wear has to be nearly 100% cotton or some sort of fire resistant material. We have t-shirts, sweat shirts, stocking caps, and a class "B" uniform top. We have the choice of standard pants or 6 Pocket EMS style. We also have a choice of foot-wear: Rocky Boots, Bates Lites, or An "athletic" style shoe manufactured by bates. We do not have issued work-out clothes or shoes, nor a stipend to purchase them.

    Default Nfpa 1975

NFPA 1975, Station/Work Uniforms for Fire and Emergency Services, attempts to eliminate dangerous fabrics and establish a degree of protection for work uniforms. It addresses such issues as thermal stability and flame resistance as they pertain to fabrics that melt, drip, burn, stick to the skin and cause burns to the wearer.

12.1 The employer agrees to purchase all required equipment, clothing, and allowances for repairs and dry cleaning, set forth under the current quartermaster system, which shall continue in effect. A list of such items and allowances shall be kept in each station. Any changes in the current quartermaster system will be made by the Fire Chief in consultation with the safety committee as established in Article 24.

Shorts are actually an option for us in the summer, I'll see if I can dig up the SOG's for that and post it. I personally don't wear them for day-to-day stuff. I like all the protection I can get..plus shorts aren't exactly blood borne pathogen resistant.
