    Question Hip Boots

Where do departments that use them, get hip boots from? Company name or website.

I am not going to use them. I am just curious.

You can get a hold of these guys :

    www.airbossdefense.com

They offer the only hip boot that is certified NFPA 1971. We bought some not too long ago.

The fire store doesn't carry hip boots.

No misprint. We checked with the manufacturer before buying them, and also with UL. Both confirmed that the hip boot from Airboss is certified to meet NFPA 1971. I suggest you check it out for yourself. Too bad Chicago didn't check with the manufacturer before making the change.

    Have a good one.

I do miss the hip boots... so much easier.

I can remember middle of winter, freezing night fire by the lake, the wind sweeping over us...freezing.

House was Fully Involved, and I mean fully involved.

I'm sitting in the front lawn on a 2 1/2 putting snow on the boots to keep my legs from burning from the heat, it was going right through the boots.

    Still, loved em.

    Jason,

The Black Diamond hip boots are actually made by Airboss. We checked them out and they had the airboss logo on them ! Might as well go straight to the manufacturer... its cheaper that way. Anyways, black diamond only has chinese boots now, and we only buy union made in america at our department.

    Have a good one.

Yeah, how did I miss this the first time.

    Firefighter2230,

You will learn fast that our chicago brethren did not and do not give a rats ***** about any kind of NFPA turnout gear ultimatum. (not saying it negativly, just matter of factly) And personally, if it works for them, then by god let em do it. People do things differently everywhere and as long as people realize that what works for one dept might not work for another, all would be fine. Rumor has is that Chicago does in fact get a mediocre amount of fires so they probably know what they are talking about. Just keep in mind that just because (insert big city name here) does it, it doesnt mean that in Hilljack, South Dakota it will work just as well. They have tried and true methods that after evaluation still fill their needs and fit best with their style of operations.

If you want more on this subject try a search along the lines of Chicago Bunker Gear or such..........

With all this Chicago talk, I'm hoping that we will make it over to the windy city sometime this spring. It's been a few years since I've been there and need to restock on some CFD shirts.

I agree with you 110% RFRDxplorer I chose a bad choice of words I suppose. What I was trying to say is if the boots would have had that all important NFPA stamp of approval so many people would not have given them so much hell for still wearing them.

I was thinking of going maybe for St Paddy's day if I can get the right time off.

Yeah, I need some shirts too. I've been running low on toilet paper

but, back to the topic, I wonder if anyone could get away with trying to wear the NFPA approved hip boots. Would be nice if they could. But, I think most would shoot them down(most being the chiefs)
