I need a new knife
Hey guys, sorry if i put this in the wrong spot but i was not sure where to put it.
Anyway, i won the high percentage award for my department and i figured i would buy a nice knife to carry in my gear.
Basically, i have 95 dollars or so leftover to spend on a knife.
So far i was considering this knife
My department runs mostly auto accidents, so the switchblade style window punch was appealing.
This is a verry good knife. They have updated it in the last few years (and made it better). I have the older style for about 10 years now. It's a little beat up and the blade doesn't stay open on its own now but, it has been a very good knife. I've cut everything from seat belts to the wire harness between the body and the door of a car. A couple of other guys on the dept. have it too and have not had any problems with theirs either. The window punch works good.If you use it wrong the punch pops out at times (not sure if they fixed that) The pouch it comes with hooks to the adjuster on my coat quite well.
The S&W is a very good knife. In fact I have a small one I carry in my pocket.
I think some of the best knives around are Benchmade brand. http://www.benchmade.com/products/pr...px?category=11
I carry a Benchmade Rescue Hook on my radio strap. It is the best thing ever for cutting seat belts, clothing, shoelaces, helmet straps, you name it. It will easily out cut a pair of trauma shears 5:1
You might want to consider getting both. The Rescue hook w/sheath is less than $35. http://www.thefirestore.com/store/pr..._molle_sheath/
One thing to consider is how you intend to use the knife. If you want a multi funtion knife that you may be cutting a seat belt with, it would be a good idea to stay away from anything with a sharp point. The S&W looks like it would be a good choice.
I have been looking for knife for firemen for some time. You need a knife that is fixed. It must be on your coat, not in a pocket. When you need a knife you wont be able to rifle through your pockets looking for it. When $hits on you need it right at your GLOVED fingertips. That rescue hook 8 is pretty close to what we would need. I have contacted numerous manufacturers and none were interested in developing a specific knife for us that actually would work. The only thing you need it to do is cut you out of wires, or an entrapment of some sort. Trauma shears work great, but you may need something bigger or sharper, especially since you hope to use it once then throw it out.
In my pocket I carry a knife from walmart for 97 cents. Its sharp, it cuts, and if it dulls ill just throw it out.
+1 for the benchmade. I carry a mini stryker auto opener in my pants and the rescue hook on my turnouts. Best knives made IMO
