Similar to the one I use:

Fire should not be an emergency to us: It's our business.

Fire is an emergency to the property owner or occupant.

4 pages and no one mentioned the king of all quotes...

flying bombers for the air force, we try to keep this in mind when it comes to training

    "Challenge yourself, the enemy will."

That relates well to the fire service I think.

I've never heard someone say "dig in" while in a fire building, except in Backdraft.

I also like a quotation from one of Brannigan's Building Construction for the Fire Service. If I remember right he picked this up from someone else, "Panic will save your life, that assumes of course that you are the first one to panic and you panic in the right direction."

What do cops and firefighters have in common? They both want to be firefighters.

The minimum safe distance from a hazmat scene can be determined by the closest cop who is still conscious. (blue canaries).

BY far the best quote yet.
I am now a past chief and the views, opinions, and comments are mine and mine alone. I do not speak for any department or in any official capacity. Although, they would be smart to listen to me.

Peter M. Leschak – “Ghosts of the Fireground”

“I’m a secular priest ordained by training, experience, and, most importantly, the willingness to accept the mantle of command. That willingness encompasses the realization that failure is easy, and such failure could kill me or, worse kill someone else…It’s the nature of our society that I’m considered unworthy of huge financial reward for that risk. But what can be earned is a certain nobility-not in a sense of aristocratic status but in the sense of striving for quality and dignity of behavior and living.”

Hazmat rule of thumb:When approaching a hazmat scene, extend your dominant arm with the thumb extended. If you can see any onscene activity around your thumb, you are too close and need to restage a little farther back.

Once when I was stringing up fireground yellow tape after a suspicious fire,a reporter asked me"Who are you?"so she could start her interview.
While trying to avoid being obvious about looking up and down her frame,I seriously responded "I am the Voice of Reason in a chaotic world" and went about my job, ignoring her.
Most folks who know me more than 5 minutes can tell that ain't always so.

When i got hired, my 2nd or 3rd day, i had a senior captain tell me (and the rest of the class), "This city (the administration) dont give a **** about you, your just a number to them", he would go on to talk about alot of stuff that day from working hard to brotherhood.

Today, for the first time in ten years, I believe him. City of Mansfield, Oh about a week ago came out and said they were laying off 25 ff's on top of the 4 we have on layoff. Thankful for us, we have a staffing clause in our contract. If not for that we would be laying off more. Thru contract talks and all this, I finally feel like i am truly just a number to this current administration. I always thought he was just being bitter, but now i understand what he meant by that comment.
