POLICE OFFICER LODD - Cotton Among First Grads Of Academy After Hurricane Katrina
New Orleans Officer Killed With Own Gun. Cotton Among First Grads Of Academy After Hurricane Katrina
POSTED: 1:50 am EST January 29, 2008
NEW ORLEANS -- It's another blow in a city where officials have been hoping the new year would see less violence.
A New Orleans police officer was shot to death with her own weapon Monday, after a man she was trying to handcuff overpowered her.
The police superintendent said officer Nicola Cotton approached the man to question him about a rape, but he attacked her and they struggled for several minutes before he grabbed the gun and shot the officer repeatedly.
The superintendent said Cotton "fought very courageously" against the man twice her size. Cotton was 24 years old and among the first graduates of the police academy after Hurricane Katrina.
Police said the suspect, Bernell Johnson, was arrested at the scene. He had been arrested before for investigation of sex offenses.

RIP, Officer Cotton.
It is so sad when our young people leave us.
