Post Hope this is not a stupid SCBA question

How do you determine how many SCBA's to ask for in a grant?
I know it has to do with seated positions and/or other things?
    Thanks in advance.

    # of seats on trucks or the NFPA minimums, whichever is higher.

    4 on pumpers, service(rescue), aerial
2 on quick attacks unless 4 door
    2 on tankers

12 minimum per department in order to meet 2in/2out, so if you don't have enough trucks to hit 12 then ask for 12.

If you have packs on ambulances (as an FD doing transport) then you have to back that up in the narrative or they go away. No people-movers (chief/responder/utility, etc).

From the AFG "Frequently Asked Questions" section....

When requesting breathing apparatus, how many SCBAs should I request for our firefighters?
The number of breathing apparatus needed for entry into environments immediately dangerous to life or health is directly linked to the number of firefighters who are trained and certified to conduct fire suppression or entry operations. Firefighters who are not trained and certified to conduct operations in these environments should not be issued breathing apparatus. For many departments, this equates to the number of firefighters that they could reasonably expect to show up at an event, i.e., the shift on duty or the number of seated positions in your fleet of vehicles.
Don't know if there is a hard and fast rule regarding this, or, like the Pirate's Code, "more of a guideline, really...."

So, I guess number of seated positions on your apparatus is a factor. We got a grant for SCBA's 3 years ago and the total number we were awarded was reduced from what was requested. Once I thought about it I realized that the number came out to 4 SCBA's per engine, which would be the "standard" sized engine company per NFPA guidelines (even though we carry 6 SCBA's on each of our engines)

Funny thing is, we only have one engine that's a custom cab....the rest are commercial, single cab chassis, with only 2 or 3 seated positions (and no SCBA seats). So it's not really number of seated positions on your particular apparatus, but seems to follow the assumption of 4 members in a standard engine company.

If you're including SCBA's for a rescue unit, I think they allow 6 SCBA's for a rescue company (my memory is a bit fuzzy on this)

My dream — and I hope you don't find this too crazy — is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."

OK, BC79er beat me to the post...He works with grants quite a bit, so his information is going to be more accurate than mine (for example, apparantly only 4 are allowed for a rescue....)

Brian I asked that question this week at a workshop and was told that Capts ride's and such can get 1 per person responding in the vehicle.

Heard that for years, still hasn't materialized since they keep cutting safety/chief officer seats from the counts. Even with backup in the narratives that X number of people are responding on the calls, they always cut pointing back to the # of seats on front line trucks.

Besides, see Attack6's comment in the other thread about what is sometimes taught in those workshops versus what really happens in the program. Unless they come out and say we can apply for small fleet seats in the Program Guidance, I wouldn't bother including them. Runs up the cost-benefit and might not beat the computer. Plus like I said, Peer is cutting them no matter what is in the narrative for # of people or any other justification. And not just saying that on ones I've written, I've worked with others to try and get them back in apps others have written and the Top says no.

Our 2004 project included 4 new SCBA; one of which was for the Safety Officer's car. It was awarded. Probably the exception and not the rule.

We had luck 3 years ago with the following:
    Engine: 4 SCBA's
    Chief's Car:1 SCBA
Training Packs (so as not to take the engine out of service): 3 SCBA's

    Good luck
