My explorer post is re-doing our bylaws and we are adding a section on duties on the fire ground. I was wondering what other explorer posts can and cannot do on the fire ground. This will help alot. If you have a section in your by-law or SOG if you can please email it to me.
Thanks

Duties on the Fire Ground

Am I reading this right or did you just say your officers let you do interior attack?????
Holy sheep s**t I can see this getting ugly..
When I was a Junior I was allowed to basically be a gopher. I could go to any calls, except medicals but what I was allowed to do was limited.Help fill SCBA, tanker shuttles, man a portable pump or basically be a runner for anything they might need.If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation?

I think "... save patient care, internal attacks" means they can't do those things.
Even the burger-flippers at McDonald's probably have some McWackers.

We are basically just a gopher. No patient care, no fighting fires, no going into the hot zone. (If ya need more I can look and get ya a copy. These are all I remember off the top of my head.) We are just there to learn.

Fetch me a gatorade, change out my bottle, assist in overhaul, pack hose, keep eyes open, mouth shut and be a sponge.

So far all the call except for one false alarm are medical calls. And all I do is what they tell me to do. Which usually consists of grabbing the stretcher if and when needed. Carrying the EMS bags and O2 kit. And on a rarity setting up the O2. The most I have ever done is check the pulse and pupils of a patient. It is all about building trust with the offices and crew. Letting them know what you do and do not know how to do. And your primary goal is to learn. I don't see why an Explorer can't set up O2 but anything much greater then that I would leave to the certified EMT's. Fires I have no experience on what I am and am not allowed to do, so I will not comment on that subject... even if there are obvious things. OH!!! Delivering smoke detectors is fun! So is going to the grocery store.

I get to go on all calls. if there's a wreck on the interstate then we are not allowed to get out. On the scene we get to: change bottles, fetch tools and stuff, assist the incident commander, help with hose, assist paramedics with rehab. What were not allowed to do: cant go in the hot zone until the incident commander declares it safe.
and thats pretty much it.

hehe.... yeah sorry for not wording that real well. We CAN NOT do those things. (I'm not one of "those" kids who wants to run alone into a burning building with a hose so I can pick up girls.
hope that clears things up.

Well...
I am not an explorer, I am a junior firefighter (I know, same thing, basically) in Guilford, VT and our rules are as follows:
No interior operations, exterior only.
No responses to the Interstate.
No mutual aid responses.
No driving apparatus.
No red lights on vehicles until 18.
Pager issued when 16 and/or after 6 months.
Pager may not be on at school.
May not leave school or school function for calls.
Those are our rules.

It varies from state to state...In Maryland any juniors who have completed FF I and FF II are allowed to make interior attacks, but must remain with an officer at all times(however this must be after school hours). Check your child labor laws to see if they specify whats allowed and not allowed. While going through FFI/II most juniors are pretty much the layout guy...After that they'll help the drive manage lines, and get appliances as needed. As for EMT wise, juniors ages 16+ can get their EMT-B card and ride the ambulance as a 3rd. They must be accompanied by a charge EMT. They can ride as the charge, but a person whose had their charge status for more than 6 months must ride 3rd to supervise them.

We can go on any call (medical or fire) and even go on wildfires. On a medical we can perform cpr, apply badages, and set up iv's. On a fire we can set up the hydrant, do salvage and overhaul, rehab. pretty much anything. On a TC we can help with extrication too.
