    Default $1000

If your FD was given $1000 without strings attached what would your department buy? Whats the handiest 'widget' every dept. with a spare $1000 should have?
My vote would be CO/Gas detector. I think low end units are about a grand.

A half decent PPV fan would get my vote. A relatively new introduction to my station but an invaluable piece of kit. Not sure a grand would cover a good one though.

1000 bucks is not going to buy you two roof saws. Maybe two home depot BS chainsaws, but nothing we could use. I would say flashlights, good ones with lead acid batteries. Or perhaps some good safety glasses for everyone. Or better yet, have someone come and give a class on something you know nothing about! A class on ladders, hose line placement, overall operations.

Where is oprah giving out a 1000 bucks? :-)

I think for a grand all you can get is the NFPA stamp on something.

Maybe cover like 1/5 of the cost of the turbo that keeps blowing in our brush truck.

Well I think they have a defect on them but won't admit it. Going on #5 for a 2006. They still cover the cost but it is annoying to keep taking the truck out of service.
