New guy from California

hello everyone.... i've wanted to become a firefighter for some time now, and have a few questions to ask. First of all i'm from California, and thinking about enrolling in this Firefighter Academy course offered through my local community college, is this the best path to go? i've called and was told the waiting list would be about a year? link is here, please check it out and let me know........http://www.fresnocitycollege.edu/fireacademy/

I also want to know how hard it is to actually become a resident firefighter, from reading up on the forums...it seems very difficult just to get your foot in the door. i know it will be a tough road ahead, and i'm ready for it.... but i really need to know how difficult it will be to make a career out of this, especially becoming a firefighter here in California. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
