    Default Patch Swapping

Should firefighter ask for patches free or should they offer to pay?

Most departments I know will swap patches with you. I don't like swapping unless I actually go to that department. I figure, "why have the patch if you haven't been there.

Proper "firehouse etiquette" is that you should either offer to pay for the patch (they do cost the patch collector and the FD money) or offer a patch from their FD in trade.

Do you go to a stamp collector or coin collector and ask for something for nothing?

PS: If trading, make sure it is a new patch. Nothing is tackier than offering a used patch.

What, you mean that used patches aren't seen as 'crusty' and therefore more desirable?

Just pay. Many places are not interested in the patch from the East Podunk Fire Dept. West Podunk maybe, East is definitely out!

Also consider that while your patch might be a department patch...ours are company patches and the cost of which comes straight from our pockets not the Dept. Typical cost is about $5.
