Each shift works a 8 hour shift on Feb. 29 which spreads out the holidays more evenly across the 3 shifts.

c shift works 24hrs on the 28th and then works the 1st 8 hours the 29th

b shift work the middle 8 hours on the 29th

a shift works the last 8 hours on the 29 and then works 24 hours on the 1st of march.

if you don't do this the same shift will continue to work the same holidays

I learned something new today! I don't know of any departments that do a switch around here.

We figured my platoon (the one that gets 2 years of holidays) would try to get this through our local. But we kinda figured the vote would be 175 for and 350 against...

The time and a half on the "big" holidays makes it a little better.

Never even has come up to do this, but I know our C-Shift seems to get the brunt of the leap year screwing. Maybe someone here has it figured out, but my recollection was that one shift seems to continually land on it.

I'm with you. Never heard of this before.

We handle the holiday issue a bit different. We always make sure all the functions (parties, golf outings, etc) are held on one of the two other shifts so that the brothers that get stuck with all the holidays can attend. Its only fair.

The brothers with grown kids and those without will also cover Christmas for those with little ones at home. Everyone works together on it.

Using MS Outlook I can conclude that our B-shift will work Xmas eve every 3 and fourth year, so C-Shift gets X-mas every 3 and 4. I could see where tossing this 3 shift day in every fourth would keep it fair. Alas, as Dave notes, our guys take care of covering each other for holidays, those with small kids are covered, only St. Patty's day and the 4th of July are difficult.

That's why it's "C" shift! Doesn't matter to me,I get EVERY holiday minus Memorial and Labor day. I let the Boss have those two just to keep him honest. T.C.
