    Default Generators

Thanks in advance for any and all input.

We are considering writing a grant for generators at three of our current key radio sights. These sights currently have no back up or only battery backup. Has anyone been successful on this before – what are the thoughts? Barking up the wrong tree? These towers serve multiple fire departments as well and Law and EMS.

Since generators fall under "Station Modifications" they would be for that purpose only. This doesn't appear to be the case here, unless those radio sights are at fire stations. Check with the Help Desk for clarification.

And if they are at the station, make sure your grant is for a STATION generator. I am sure it would be a great bonus that the radio sight is there also.

If you try to sell it based on radio first, without explaining the benefit to the station, I think you'd be destined to fail, IMO.

Looks to me like should be a communications grant. A dispatch/transmitter doesn't even exist if you don't have backup power supply.

Perhaps a good idea if you had some other gear other than just the genset (roll into a larger project). A general upgrade to the tower/transmitter. Is your equipment narrowband capable. If not this is the time to do the upgrade. We all have to be narrowband NLT 1012 (so get in place by 2010 or so a very very good idea).

We are about 25% done with a regional upgrade to our communications system - +$815,000 we are using a voted system with about seven receive sights and five transmit sights. All of our primary sights do have full generated power and the aux sights are co located sights where the local cell company has allowed us on their towers and in their buildings. These sights are backed up with battery systems but we had considered placing gensets at these locations as well if we could get them funded.

Should I even try for a station gen? We are also asking for compressor/cascade (priority #1) and rescue tools/airbags (priority #2). Is a generaor out of line with this grant. What size and type do they allow?

    Any help appreciated.

GM, I'd put the generator off until next year. You don't want to get too many projects into 1 app. I'm sure it can be done, but as taught by the gurus, pick a complete project...better chances.
