You can... Or at least I can.... Don't think I ever will as a Explorer. But back to my "You can" comment. It all depends on state laws. Your department rules and your post by-laws. It simply boils down to rules and regulations for each individual department. But it is also your officers call on what he or she wants you to do. Just be great full for any experience and knowledge you can get for gophering gatoraid(sp?) or just sitting at the pump and learning. Some of the best information can be gained from just watching and asking questions at appropriate times. EDIT: I see no NEED for me to do anything on the fire ground. Or even be on the fire ground. But because of the willingness of the fire department I am allowed to gain knowledge of this job and see what it is like. Even ride along.

BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. WHINE. BLAH. BLAH. MORE WHINE. BLAH.

It has to do with this little thing call LIABILITY. When you prove to me that your parents would have a problem with you fighting a fire that is so bad, a defensive attack is needed, I'll still be opposing because it's stupid. As the white rapper Eminem says, snap back to reality. Sit back and learn about the job. Save the hands on time for training and drilling. The fire ground isn't the place for it as an Explorer/Junior. You have to do the little stuff before you can do the big boy stuff. You have to go to school before they give you a Diploma.

I may be on your side if you can tell me 50 reasons how allowing Juniors and Explorers to operate on the fireground as trained firefighters is good. A minimum of 50. Also write me a 10 page paper - that's right, 10 pages - on how this will decrease fire deaths. Also another minimum of 5 pages paper that explains reasons an underage juvenile should be able to do this. THEN show me the petition you're going to get to change the child labor laws to say we can work in IDLH environments. To change an Amendment to the US Constitution, you need a minimum of 1,000,000 signatures for it to be even considered... So base your assumption off of that to change a State Law how many signatures you need.

The laws are there for one reason and one reason only. To protect you and your fellow explorers/juniors. That's it. It's not there to screw you guys around and not let you get any hands on it's for your own good. Why risk having a minor get hurt or worse yet killed because they were backing up a line or whatever. I'm not saying that a full firefighters life is any less important but I'm sure you can catch my drift or at least I hope so.

These types of programs are there for one reason or at least they should be. To give the young people a chance to experience to the firefighting world and to possibly get some training under your belt so when you do become a full firefighter in a few years you'll be that much ahead of the game. I know it's a **** off, I experienced it too, but now I realize why I stood back and watched all those years. Relax and take it all in. Your time will come my friend.

Now I wouldnt go that far.

    But..........

like has been said, alot depends on th individual department. Some places let you man exterior lines, others dont, etc.

    It all depends.

Little Bro, we need to get you into rehab. And I'm not talking where the cute EMS chicks hangout to take sexy firemen (like me) blood pressure, and give us cold drinks, I'm talking, "Hi, my name is__________, and I have a man crush."

It'll be OK Bro, we will support you through it.

I'm the one trying to get away... I want nothing to do with this area much longer. When I go to Pittsburgh, for school, I don't think I'll be coming back after that. I have a job waiting for me in California, a job on the north side of Pittsburgh, and I have thought about Florida and some other places other than the Blackhole - I mean, Toledo, Ohio.

Why the h*ll not? Because you are a friggin' JUNIOR!! You are there to learn, observe and listen. Nothing more than that. If the Chief or a senior firefighter asks you "to come along" then great they think you are ready to really learn and get some hands on.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. Good things come to those who wait.

Like all the others said...safety and liability are pretty important when it comes down to a structure fire. Just be thankful that you can do ride-alongs at all. A lot of cities don't even allow ride alongs.

    just my two cents.

I'm just saying i wish the laws were a little bit looser when it comes to things. I don't under stand why we can't back up a hose with an officer outside the building in the defensive attack. By that time we are basically ****in the fire out. So I guess what I'm trying to say is instead of sitting in the truck at fire scenes, why cant we get some hands on time? I'm not saying let us in the fire, I'm saying why cant we stick with an officer or someone qualified and do small things.. other than fetch Gatorade's ... Just a thought....

    Why?

Because the command staff of the FD you are "affiliated" with are using something called common sense.. an extremely rare element in today's society.
