Our small vol department has applied for a pumper tanker grant in the past. While we have gotten close we still don't have our truck. This yerr we were told we need to be NFPA 1002 certified. While I am all about more certs I want to know how others have gotten by this.

Technically, I think they are required to have NFPA 1002-level training (I don't believe it mentions certification, but certification ranks higher). We have instructors that are qualified to teach driver/operator, so we do it in-house to meet the requirement. It's a modified version of the state's D/O course, so they can test for certification if they meet the requirements to take the test (must have FF I and II to take state test).

We are following Catch's strategy, but if you apply again you should ask for the funding to host the training. I quoted the cost last year from MU here in Missouri for our tanker app and they said it would run approximately $4000 for about 25 ff's. Be sure and mention this in your narrative.

Also be advised, that FEMA is requiring that you meet the Medical Exam requirement's of 1582 as refered to in 1002.
This was confirmed by both reading the FAQ and the help desk.

What was the breakdown of cost for the 25 FF for $4,000? We are putting together a plan and the Essentials 5 books alone were about $8,000. My budget sounds WAAAAAAY off from your estimate and I am worried that I am in left field.

Ya, that was to host a driver/operator course, wish it was ff I&II! Red Bull, make the switch!
