I am looking for sources for information about the history of fire gear and the progression of protective equipment.

Go to www.fireengineering.com and select the media center tab. In there you will find a radio program podcast called Pride & Ownership: The Love for the Job by Chief Rick Lasky from the Lewisville, TX fire dept. There have been 8 shows so far, and they all cover some incredible history of the fire service. Shows 2,3,4 and 5 also had Glen Corbett, a professor at John Jay college, and firefighting expert, on the show sharing his enormous amount of history and knowledge of the fire service. Check it out, you can listen to them on FE and download for free to your computer, it will have what you are looking for.
