Does anyone know about how many they hire a year, or any info on the department would be great.

Do a cursory search of this forum, as well as a google search, and you'll get those answers easily.

Do you have any specific questions? Some of us are actively in the hiring process with either City or County...you never specified which department you're talking about.

I've heard 200-250/year. This is going on for five years, but I'm not sure when it started. I've heard different answers. Maybe someone else can clear that up.

JLam has a lot of knowledge about the dept. He lives over there and is going through the background investigation. I'm going through the initial panel review now, and waiting to hear if I make it to the background investigation, but I live in Milwaukee, WI. So I don't have nearly as much knowledge about the department. I only know what I could find online and from my station visits.

The County hire on average hire about 100 a year, LA City is a little bigger so maybe 150 on average.

Partly because of the drop program, LA City started last year to conduct continuous testing and back to back academies until they hire at least 250 new firefighters each of the next five years!

I believe you need to have a CDL at time of appointment.

    Google is your friend:

    http://www.lacity.org/per/psb/lafd_employment.htm

A valid California Driver's License is required at the time of appointment. Once hired, Firefighters are required to obtain and maintain a California Class 'B' or a Firefighter's driver's license, in accordance with Fire Department Procedures, as a condition of employment.
