I was just wondering if anyone's Dept.'s issue Personal Saftey System's or bail out kits, or harnesses to firefighters. Every F.F. on the Dept. that im a explorer on is issued a PSS and harness that is attached to their bunker pants. Its a great system and I heard that many other Dept.'s are starting to issue them to their F.F.'s. Thanks.

I applaud all Chief's that go the extra mile and issue self rescue systems. However, do you get trained in the use and do you train regularly to be proficient with what you have been issued?

I am not issued the PSS but I do have a gemtor (I believe thats the company that makes the harness) harness on my bunker pants that has a attachment for the PSS. I did not try the PSS out yet but I believe I will over the summer during training seminars at the academy. But all the firefighters on the Dept. have one and it saved a guy about a month or two ago.

FDNYexp6012,
Explorers are not issued them, but most of the guys on the truck have them. Why do you have a gemtor harness? What do you use the gemtor for? When I'm a full time firefighter I will get one but, I see no need for it as an explorer.

I also have had a gemtor for a while now, as a junior. Mainly used for training now, so I know how to use it when I am a full firefighter.

If you are using the PSS that FDNY uses or the Petzl EXO system as the rst of the world will call it, excellent choice. I recently took the instructor course and was blown away by the system. We went out the window no less than 50 times over three days. Truly a great system.

Just because it's called a throw bag, doesn't mean you throw the whole bag... you're supposed to hold onto the rope.
