NEW YORK -- The city is considering a plan to use special decals on emergency vehicles during major events following a new alert that terrorists might try to use firetrucks, police cars and ambulances as deadly weapons.

In a system similar to that used in the presidential motorcades, city vehicles would be fixed with prominent security tags, changed for each event, law-enforcement sources said.
The city is also considering special markers for all city vehicles, starting with ambulances, which terrorists would be unable to counterfeit.
The proposed measures came from an emergency meeting of top fire and police officials yesterday after two suspicious men tried to buy a replica ambulance from a movie-prop store in New Jersey.
In the wake of the scare, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services also considered halting all sales of cast-off city vehicles to the public, but decided against the measure.
A CAS spokesman said all the vehicles on sale were little more than the "bare body" and that all the lights, sirens and identifying markers were removed.
