The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the United States Fire Administration announced the second round of the 2002 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awards.

The 281 fire departments chosen in this round have been awarded a total of $21,885,549.

The list (below) shows 167 of the departments received grants for Fire Operations and Firefighter Safety Program, totaling $12,808,857.

Also, 78 departments received grants in the Firefighting Vehicles Acquisition Program, totaling $6,045,437 and 34 departments received grants for Fire Prevention Program, amounting to $2,963,021. Grants in the EMS Program were made to two departments totaling $68,175.

FEMA and the USFA will announce about 5,500 grants over the next five months, until the full $360 million is dispersed.

More than 19,900 fire departments applied for grants this year, submitting requests totaling approximately $2.98 billion.

The next list of grant awardees should follow in two weeks. USFA plans to continue announcing a new list every two weeks thereafter and complete the program by the end of the year. Prior to announcing a list, departments must be contacted and congressional leaders informed.

The letter informing those who did not make it to the peer review level and therefore will not receive a grant this round, will be going out electronically. Tom Olshanski, Grant Information Co-ordinator, USFA, said Administrator David Paulison has personally become involved in this letter hoping to encourage departments to keep trying for the grant awards.

There continues to be the group of departments that ride the line of getting or not receiving an award. Changes continue, Olshanski said, and money may become available to fund additional grant requests. Some departments will be waiting for a definitive yes or no for some time he said.
