Baltimore County is located in central Maryland and surrounds the city of Baltimore on three sides. Extending from the Chesapeake Bay in the southeast to Pennsylvania in the north. Baltimore County covers an area of 610 square miles and has a population of over 754,000. Baltimore County covers a wide spectrum use from heavy industrial areas to suburban residential to farmland. Fire, rescue, and emergency medical services are provided by the Baltimore County Fire Department. The Baltimore County Fire Department is a combination department staffed by over 1,000 career and 2,000 volunteer personnel. The Emergency Operations division includes 25 career and 35 volunteer fire stations. Apparatus at these locations includes 88 engine companies; 27 career and 61 volunteer, 13 truck companies; 7 career and 6 volunteer, and 3 tower ladders. Ten career engine companies are advanced life support capable, which are strategically located throughout Baltimore County. Volunteer companies also operate the county's nine heavy rescue squads
