The Arcata Fire District covers approx. 63 sq. mi. and serves a population of approx. 36,000. The District provides emergency fire and EMS response to the City of Arcata, the unincorporated town of McKinleyville, the communities of Bayside and Manila and the surrounding rural area. Humboldt State University and the Arcata/Eureka Regional Airport are within the fire district. The original fire department organization was formed in 1884. Current minimum on-duty staffing is two two-person engine companies and one duty chief. Emergency responses are paged out to volunteer and off-duty career personnel.
