Wells Fire Department operates out of three stations. The Corner Station is manned 24 hours a day with two firefighters. During the day Monday through Friday there is a third firefighter on duty. The Branch station and High Pine station are volunteer stations. We run three shifts of two plus the daytime person for a total of seven career firefighters. We respond to calls for fire, motor vehicle collisions and Haz-Mat. We are trained to the Operations level in Haz-Mat. The town's lifeguard force operates under the jurisdiction of the Fire Chief. Currently the Fire Department does not operate the ambulance in town but occasionally will respond for support depending on severity of the incident or availability of the ambulance. We operate a Jet-Ski for ocean rescue. Wells is a large town, encompassing more than 64 square miles. There are at least 10,000 year round residents. During the summer months our 7 miles of beautiful beaches brings the total to over 50,000. This, plus 15 miles of the Maine Turnpike (Rte. 95) keep us busy.
