The Hamden Fire Dept. consists of an career staff of 92 firefighters of which 23 are on duty at all times. The on duty staff operates out of 5 stations, they operate 5 engines, 1 ladder truck, 2 rescue trucks and a battalion chief. Each rescue is staffed with a paramedic that can provide advanced life support services.In addition to the on duty staff, volunteers staff 2 engines, a mini-pumper, and 3 brush trucks. We protect a population of approx. 52,000 people in a mostly residential area. Many of the buildings in town are of the multiple occupancy type. Other hazards include, a large retail shopping strip, many light commercial and industrial buildings, an Amtrak rail line, a state highway and Sleeping Giant State Park, which due to its many cliffs and ledges is responsible for many mountain rescues each year.
