Thunderbolt Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects 2,500 people living in an area of 6 square miles. Thunderbolt Fire Department operates out of a new fire station facility located off Mechanics Avenue (behind the Thunderbolt Library). Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. We have an ISO rating of 5. The Thunderbolt Volunteer Fire Department was started in 1949 to protect residents and its shrimping fleets. We currently have approximately 30 Firefighters and EMS personnel, including a Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, Training Officer and a Safety Officer protecting a community filled with homes and multiple types of businesses including 5 marina's and the Country’s largest yacht refurbishing facility. We have 4 Pumpers and a Squad housed in 2 Fire Stations. Our department prides itself on its dedication to the community and by having won both the 1996 & 1999 State of Georgia firefighter’s competition.
