We are located in the State of Connecticut in Litchfield County, approximately 30 miles West of Hartford, CT and operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department with a combination of volunteer and paid members.
Winsted Ambulance has been serving the residents of Winsted, Winchester, Colebrook and parts of Barkhamsted, since the year 1968. We have approximately 55 active members with the following certifications EMT-Intermediates, EMT-Basics, MRTs as well as EMT-Paramedics. Our call volume in 2005 was approx. 1,300 calls. Daytime hours are staff with paid technicians from 6:00AM until 4:00PM. The hours from 4:00 PM to 6:00 AM and 24 hours Saturday and Sunday are covered by Volunteers.
We operate two ambulances and patients are mostly transported to Winsted Health Center located in Winsted or Charlotte Hungerford Hospital located in Torrington. On rare occasions we also transport patients to St. Francis Hospital as well as Hartford Hospital both located in Hartford. In some situations, a paramedic responds to the calls with our ambulance. Depending on the severity of the illness/injury, Life Star (medical helicopter) is dispatched to transport the patient(s) to Hartford Hospital, a level one trauma facility.
