Mountain View Volunteer Fire Dept. Inc. proudly protects 3200 people living in an area of 5 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status.
Mountain View Volunteer Fire Department has been serving the communities of Hays, Mtn. View, Rock Creek, and Dehart since 1956. Our Medical Responder program was one of the first in the county, and has been providing quick response basic life support to our community since 1988. One of our main goals is to educate the children of our community about fire safety. We have the largest Elementary School in the county and we spend several hours each year teaching fire safety classes. We hand out pamplets, books, and calendars stressing fire safety facts and actions to take in case of an emergency. Our district also has a Middle School, High School and the Wilkes County Airport which is one of the largest in Western North Carolina with private compainies and corporations flying in and out daily. Our fire runs and medical responder runs have more than doubled in just the past 5 years. Our 30 firemen are dedicated to this department and the community they serve with over 530 combined years of service. Each member also strives to help maintain our iso rating of 5 and to keep our tax rate of $.05 cents per $100.00 as low as possible for our citizens. Our surrounding departments that we work closely with through a Mutual Aid Agreement are: Mulberry-Fairplains, Knotville, Traphill, Roaring River, Shepherds Crossroads, and McGrady volunteer fire departments.
