The Spencertown Fire Company was established in 1917 and is located just outside of the hamlet of Spencertown, which is in the Town of Austerlitz, New York State. It is one of two fire stations which make up the Austerlitz Fire District. There are approximately 40 Spencertown Fire Company members, of which two thirds are active Firefighters. The current fire station was built on five acres of land and was completed in 2002. It consists of four truck bays, a large kitchen, handicapped lift, conference room, and a small member's entertainment room maintained with funds left by a deceased member. The Spencertown fire station houses one 4WD Engine, one 2000 gallon Tanker/Pumper, one 4WD Rescue Truck and one 4WD Brush Truck. Along with the Austerlitz Fire Company located 8 miles to the east, the SFC serves approximately 1500 residents who reside in the Town of Austerltiz, as well as that part of the Town of Hillsdale located in the Green River Fire District. The area covered by the Austerlitz Fire District, (both fire companies), is the largest Fire District by area in Columbia County, NY. Also located in the Fire District are two major campgrounds, two highly traveled highways running its length , (Taconic Parkway & NYS Rte 22) and several thousand acres of State owned forest land open for outdoor activities. In addition to Fire & Rescue service, the Spencertown Fire Company provides residents of the entire Fire District with emergency medical assistance. An EMS 1st Responder squad has been active throughout the District since the early 1980s. The unit is made up of trained EMS 1st responders who are dispatched whenever one of three Rescue squads covering the District is requested for medical emergencies. The 1st Responders are trained and equipped to provide basic life support until the arrival of the rescue squad. The fire company has an active Ladies Auxiliary. Annual events held by both auxiliary members and firefighters include Pancake Breakfasts, a Beef BBQ, a youth Halloween Party and youth Christmas Party that Santa attends. During winter months Fire Company members flood an area on its property built to provide safe ice skating for all to use. Each year a $1000 Scholarship is awarded to a college bound young adult who resides in the fire company service area. Having many individuals with 20, 30, 40 and 50 year memberships, the fire company has a long history of service to the community. Responding to approximately 120 emergency calls each year, the volunteers of the Spencertown Fire Company work and train hard to provide the best emergency service possible to its neighbors.
