Thank you for visiting our website & to Firehouse.com for making it available. Plainview is a community of 1,353 (2000 Census). It is located in Northeast Nebraska at the intersections of NE ST HWY 13 & US HWY 20. We are located 30 miles NW of Norfolk, NE, 60 miles SW of Yankton, SD, and, 80 miles W of Sioux City, IA. The city of Plainview was incorporated on 1886. The first official meeting of the Fire Department was on November 5, 1903. The ambulance service was started on Monday, December 01, 1969. Prior to that Ashburn Funeral Home provided ambulance service. In September of 1991 Plainview Ambulance changed their name to Plainview Community Ambulance. In July of 1998 the members of the Plainview Volunteer Fire Department and the Plainview Community Ambulance merged to form the new Plainview Volunteer Fire Department Fire Division & Emergency Medical Services Division. This has really worked well for us. On Tuesday, August 09, 2005, the City Council and the Rural Fire Board voted to merge into one entity. On Monday, September 12, 2005 the Pierce County Commissioners voted to approve this and on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 the Antelope County Commissioners did the same. On Tuesday, September 13, 2005 during a joint meeting of the Plainview City Council & Rural Fire Board, the final paperwork was signed. This action dissolved the Old Rural Fire Board. On Wednesday, September 28, 2005 a New Rural Fire Board was elected and took office on Saturday, October 01, 2005. By doing this, all property owners (city & rural) will be taxed equally. On Tuesday, November 22, 2005 (postponed from the 15th due to the storm), the Rural Board awarded the bid to BC Builders of Battle Creek, NE to build our new fire station. It has a tentative completion date of July 01-August 01, 2006. Even though the station was not 100% completed, the Fire Division moved in on Saturday, August 05, 2006 and ran the first call on Saturday, August 19, 2006. The EMS Division moved in on Saturday, August 12, 2006 and ran the first call on Sunday, August 13, 2006. On Tuesday, December 13, 2005 (held 1 week early due to Christmas) the Rural Board awarded the bid to Smeal of Snyder, NE for a new pumper to be delivered in December of 2006 and to Osage (EDM) of Lincoln, NE for a new demo ambulance to be delivered in April of 2006 and to issue a 20 year $1 Million Bond Issue to pay for above purchases. The new ambulance was delivered on Monday, April 10, 2006 and put into service on Tuesday, April 11, 2006. Currently we have a total of 40 members of which 26 are members of the Fire Division, 6 are members of both the Fire & EMS Divisions, and 8 are members of the EMS Division. Our all time high is 50 members in the Fire Division and 18 in the EMS Division. Our all time low is 29 members in the Fire Division and 10 in the EMS Division. 9 of our Fire Division members are FF1 Certified. The City Council meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 7 PM. The Rural Board meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 8 PM. The members of the Plainview VFD Fire & EMS Divisions meet EVERY Tuesday. We are one of only a handful of departments in Nebraska that meets once a week. (The others that we know of are Ralston also on Tuesday and Gretna & Ponca Hills which both meet on Thursday.) We are a very progressive department. Most only meet 1-2 times a month. We are very proud of the time our volunteers put forth in training/maintenance. The 1st Tuesday is Training for the Fire and Maintenance for the EMS. The 2nd Tuesday is Maintenance for the Fire and Training for the EMS. The 3rd Tuesday is Training for both the Fire and EMS. All Training/Maintenance is at 7 PM. The last Tuesday is the Business meeting at 8 PM. The November Business meeting is election of officers. If there are 5 Tuesdays in a month, the 4th Tuesday is another Training/Maintenance at 7 PM. The 3rd Tuesday in July the Department hosts its Annual Feed. This is an appreciation to the surrounding departments that provide us mutual aid throughout the year (Brunswick, Royal, Creighton, Verdigre, Wausa, Osmond and Pierce and for our retirees (Mimimum 5 YRS Of Service). Social hour is at 1800 with the meal at 1900. Special thanks to the Plainview Klown Band for providing music.
