The Phoenix Fire Department is one of the busiest fire departments in the United States. Phoenix currently has 47 fire stations, 54 engine companies in service, 13 ladder companies and 29 rescues (ambulances). More than 1.3 million people live in Phoenix and many of them will need help at some time or another. In 2002, the Phoenix Fire Department responded to a total of 133,519 calls: 16,339 fire calls, 104,635 medical calls, 11,177 miscellaneous calls and 500+ special operations calls. Separate from this total, we also transported patients to the hospital 52,387 times. The average response time was 4 minutes, 49 seconds. There are many things citizens can do to help the fire department help you and other citizens in the community. Whenever there is a fire or a medical emergency, there are things citizens can do, or not do, which make a difference in how effective firefighters can be in emergency situations.
