The Winnisquam Fire Department is a State Certified, Private, All Volunteer Fire Department, founded during the World War II, some 60 years ago, to cover, on a first response basis, the Winnisquam Lake area of the Towns of Belmont, Sanbornton and Tilton, and is located in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. These communities provide the operating budget and capital funding for the department. We are on also toned on an automatic response for any call on the Lake, for the Lake area of the Town of Meredith at the North end of the Lake, and some target locations in the City of Laconia. The Town or City Departments are always toned along with our Department on all calls. We have one station, which is located just off busy Route 3, at the East end of the Winnisquam Bridge, about six miles East of I-93. We respond with two engines, an ALS ambulance, and a four-wheel drive forestry unit. which is converted to Ice Rescue in the Winter. We also operate a fire boat, with fire supression and medical response capability. Our boat is the only fire department boat that is kept in the water (when the lake isn't frozen) on the 13 mile long lake. We average 30 members, 21 of which are State Certified Firefighters, 3 are EMT-I's, and 10 are EMT-B's. We ran 396 calls in 2004, with about 60% being medical or auto accidents. The Lakes Region, the area around Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Winnisquam, and Squam Lake ("Golden Pond"), hosts a large number of tourists year round...for boating in the Summer, leaf "peeping" in the Fall, and skiing, snow-mobiling and ice fishing in the Winter. We are a member of the Lakes Region Mutual Fire Aid System, which operates a state of the art dispatch center for some 35 Fire Departments, covering an area larger than the State of Rhode Island.
