The Ohio River Road Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects approximately 5600 people living in an area of approximately 65 square miles. We operate out of one station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status.
The Ohio River Road Volunteer Fire Department has provided fire and emergency services to residents of Lesage, WV, and surrounding communities since January 1966. The fire department is made up of 34 volunteers who respond to nearly 700 alarms annually. The fire department consists of one fire chief, one deputy chief, one assistant chief, two captains, two lieutenants, one safety officer and one public information officer. Other support personnel include a treasurer, a secretary, five civilian Board of Directors members, and several committee members, in addition to firefighters and emergency medical personnel.
The department serves the Ohio River Road Volunteer Fire Department Rural Fire Protection District which includes approximately 65 square miles in and around Lesage, WV. The rural fire protection district is bound by the City of Huntington, WV, to the southwest, the Ohio shoreline of the Ohio River to the west, Mason County, WV to the north and east, and the rural fire protection districts of Barboursville, Ona and Milton, WV, to the south.
The fire department protects approximately 18 linear miles of the Ohio River. Included within the rural fire protection district is a CSX Transportation main freight line which connects Cincinnati, OH, and Cumberland, MD. Major industry located within the district includes Parks Corporation, a national manufacturer of paint products; Service Machine Company, a world-wide leader in electrical product production; and Alcon Surgical, Inc., a major manufacturer of optical lenses. Other industry includes Trans-Fab, Inc.; Hercules Industries, Inc.; Arrow Concrete; American Babbitt Bearing Co.; Hammer Industries; M & P Industries and the Barboursville Block Company. The rural fire protection district includes private and government-owned forests, including the Powell Wetlands and the Greenbottom Wildlife Management Area which is home to hundreds of species of rare birds and insects. Other organizations within the fire protection district includes the YMCA Glenbrier, a family outdoor swimming complex, Riviera Country Club which features a championship 18-hole golf course and Robert Newlon Field, one of the region's last remaining grass field airports.
