About our City

Catoosa, Oklahoma is located just North East of Tulsa, in Rogers County. Our Government Type: Strong Mayor And City Council. The Fire Department: Paid Fire Chief, 3 Paid Firefighters, And 20 Volunteer Firefighters. In 1971, The City of Catoosa passed an ordinance that officially created a Volunteer Fire Department. Dale Lynch was named the First Fire Chief of The City of Catoosa. In 2000 a second fire station was added to the City. The summer of 2001 the City hired it's first three full time Firefighters. Catoosa is a Capital Improvements Planning city. Catoosa is a Cherokee word meaning, On The Hill, which describes its position just northeast of Tulsa, nestled in the hills of Oklahoma's Green Country. Its early settlers were the West Cherokees, who arrived in 1817 and late the Eastern Cherokees who arrived in 1863. The community was originally situated in the lowlands, northeast of its present location and was known as Fort Spunky. It was there that the first post office and school, both constructed of logs, were established. In 1882, the A & P Railroad (late the Frisco), built its line from Vinita to Catoosa, where it became the end of the line. The cattle rail terminal was established and soon herds were driven here from Texas and further west to be shipped to Kansas City and points east. Huge stock pens were built on the west side of the railroad. Continuing its role as an economic and transportation hub, Catoosa was the city of choice for the head of the McCellan-Kerr Navigation System and the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, which was completed in 1971. Approximately 45 industries are located in the industrial park, employing 1,700 people. The modern Catoosa has much to offer both businesses and families. The progressive attitude of the city has resulted in the construction of a new civic center in Catoosa, which houses the public library and community center, as well as provide a recreation area. The community has a thriving social infrastructure, with many civic, fraternal, athletic, youth and special interest organizations. Catoosa is located within an hour of many area lakes, including Ft. Gibson, Oologah, Keystone, Grand Lake of the Cherokees and Skiatook. Catoosa is in Rogers County, which was the second fastest growing county in Oklahoma from 1990 to 1995. Sound economic growth, excellent location and a committed citizenry make Catoosa a quality Oklahoma community.

Brother when you weep for me Remember that it was meant to be
Lay me down and when you leave Remember I'll be at your sleeve
In every dark and choking hall I'll be there as you slowly crawl
On every roof in driving snow I'll hold your coat and you will know
In cellars hot with searing heat At windows where a gate you meet
In closets where young children hide You know I'll be there at your side
The house from which I now respond Is overstaffed with heroes gone
Men who answered one last bell Did the job and did it well
As firemen we understand That death's a card dealt in our hand
A card we hope we never play But one we hold there anyway
That card is something we ignore As we crawl across a weakened floor
For we know that we're the only prayer For anyone that might be there
So remember as you wipe your tears The joy I knew throughout the years
As I did the job I loved to do I pray that thought will see you through...
