Smith Grove Fire Department The idea of establishing the Smith Grove Fire Dept. was generated in the summer of 1973 by Johnny Allen. In October 1973,the Community Center Board consisting of Glenn Howard, Richard Hicks, David Pardue and others discussed the idea. Glenn Howard had incorporation papers drawn up and gained permission to purchase one acre of land from Smith Grove Community Center. Schooling began in September 1973, when Jerry Lewis taught a 40 hour basic class firefighting course at Glenn Howard’s warehouse. The attendees were Robert Cornelius, Charlie Ellis, Lester Allen, Woodie Bates, Charles Williams, and Johnny Allen. In November 1973, a turkey shoot was held on the Community Center Ball field. Woodie Bates, Lester Allen, C.W. Allen, Jack Paige, and others worked to make the turkey shoot a success. The money was used to purchase a 1952 Chevrolet fire truck from Clemmons Fire Department. The truck was kept at Glenn Howard’s garage. The building of a station began in 1974 when Ausbon Ellis and Wayne Snider dug the footings, In the fall of the year,Lester Allen and C.W. Allen hauled dirt to the building site. Roy Carter and his crew laid blocks for the foundation in December 1974. On January 1, 1975 several fireman and neighbors helped with carpenter work and added the roof. Many hours of volunteer work were spent on the station. In March 1975, the floors were poured.
