Sacramento City Fire Department

The Sacramento City Fire Department began as a volunteer department on February 5, 1850, one year after the City of Sacramento was incorporated. It is the first volunteer fire department in the western United States. In 1872, the state legislature passed a bill that created one of California's first paid fire departments. Since then, it has evolved from a fledgling fire department with hand-drawn carts and horse-drawn wagons to a highly sophisticated, skilled, all risk organization providing services in fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials regulation and response, special and technical rescue, fire prevention code enforcement, public education, and disaster preparedness.
