Professional Fire Fighters of Manchester,CT I.A.F.F. Local 1579 proudly protects 55000 people living in an area of 27 square miles. We operate out of 5 stations that protect a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a paid status.
Local 1579 represents the men and women of the Manchester Fire-Rescue-EMS Department, formerly known as the South Manchester Fire Department. Our Local is 38 years old, and was founded in 1963 by ten members of the South Manchester Fire Department. Our I.A.F.F. Charter was official on October 27th, 1965. The first president of the local was Harold Pinky Pohl. Robert O. Martin was the next president followed by Robert T. Barker. Our current president is David M. Mayer. Our local consists of 67 uniformed professional fire fighters, EMT's, MRT's and Paramedics as well as Lieutenants and the Assistant Superintendant of Fire Alarms. We are involved in many community activities such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Midget Football League/Junior Athletic Association, Sponsors of Little League Baseball Teams, Heritage Day Festival, Fire Prevention and Education Activities, just to name a few.
