Firehouse World, the West Coast's largest fire service event, returns to sunny San Diego with an outstanding educational lineup featuring some of the most respected and accomplished instructors from around the world, an expanded exhibit hall with even more opportunities to review the latest gear and equipment, a strong focus on physical fitness and networking events, and several featured presentations related to major events.

New Challenges – Same Priorities

The Firehouse World 2018 theme is New Challenges – Same Priorities, underscoring the fire service’s unwavering commitment to our ever-present priorities—life safety, incident stabilization and property preservation. The educational lineup features a host of sessions focused on these “bread-and-butter” topics and the skills that every firefighter must understand and master.

Through its “Extra Alarm Sessions,” the conference also highlights the fire service’s new challenges related to active-shooter events, wildland/urban interface conflagrations, and other major fireground issues now facing our members. Don’t miss these special sessions:

  • Santa Rosa Wildfires—Tragedy in Wine Country: Tony Gossner, fire chief, Santa Rosa, CA, Fire Department, and representatives from CAL FIRE and the state’s Office of Emergency Services talk about the unprecedented October 2017 conflagration that destroyed thousands of structures, making it the most destructive fire in California history.

  • Las Vegas Shooting—Tragedy at the Route 91 Harvest Festival: Greg Cassell, fire chief, Clark County, NV, Fire Department, along with representatives from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, address the response and recovery efforts related to the deadliest mass shooting in American history, with 58 killed and more than 500 injured.

  • Tragedy in London—Lessons Learned from the Grenfell Tower Fire: Assistant Commissioner Graham Ellis, Operational Resilience/Special Operations Group with the London Fire Brigade, speaks to code enforcement issues and offers takeaways from the response to this wind-driven high-rise fire with rapid fire spread in combustible cladding.

  • Ghost Ship Lessons Learned: James Bowron, Battalion Chief Oakland, CA, Fire Department, shares the play-by-play of the fire response to this massive fire in a converted warehouse/artist collective that left 36 people dead.

With more than 80 educational sessions, Firehouse World 2018 offers access to some of the top experts and instructors to help you better manage the ever-evolving challenges while maintaining the same critical priorities of safety and efficiency.

New & Special Programs

Firehouse World 2018 will also offer new programs, including two Train-the-Trainer opportunities, presented by some of the top researchers and subject-matter experts.

Fire Dynamics Boot Camp

In conjunction with the Underwriters Laboratories Firefighter Safety Research Institute (UL FSRI), the First Responder Center for Excellence for Reducing Occupational Illness, Injuries and Deaths will host a three-day Fire Dynamics Boot Camp designed to empower and prepare fire service leaders and instructors to incorporate the most current research about fire behavior and firefighting tactics into their training programs. Through this Train-the-Trainer model, the boot camp begins with small tabletop fire experiments, continues with reduced-scale fire development and flow path models, and concludes with full-scale walkthrough of a training prop to demonstrate how attendees can apply the fire dynamics information in the street.

National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF)—Attributes of Leading

Using the newly produced NFFF video series “Attributes of Leading,” Kevin Conant and Brian Crandall offer an interactive, case study-based Train-the-Trainer Program intended to build more effective company and chief officers. Participants will practice effective leading actions, including facilitated discussion techniques and methods for implementing the techniques at their own departments.

Healthy Firefighters—Improving the Work Environment of Firefighter Demonstration

Stefan Magnusson, firefighter and Health & Safety representative for the Skellefteå Fire & Rescue service in Sweden, presents the Skellefteå Model, a European approach to improving firefighter work environments and overall health. The demonstration on the exhibit hall floor will review the three key factors in reducing the quantity of harmful substances to which firefighters are exposed.

Fitness Focus

Underscoring the Firehouse commitment to firefighter health and wellness, Firehouse World 2018 offers multiple opportunities to engage in physical activity while at the show. Daily workouts include:

  • Tuesday Sweat Session: Adam LaReau, 02X Human Performance, will lead the group in a workout focused on increasing performance while decreasing injuries, specifically injuries of the shoulders, back and knees. The conditioning session is designed to encourage working in teams and using everyday equipment that can be found in a typical firehouse (sledges, firehose, tires, sandbags, etc.).
  • Wednesday 5–10K Run/Walk: Join Firehouse Editor-in-Chief Tim Sendelbach and Firehouse Contributor Aaron Zamzow for this non-competitive run/walk along the San Diego Bay. Course support will be provided along the way, including drinks, course markings, etc. All fitness levels welcome; we all work at our own pace.
  • Thursday 343 Memorial Workout: Led by Firehouse Contributor Aaron Zamzow, this workout honors and remembers those firefighters lost on 9/11 by doing 343 reps of each exercise: push-ups, prisoner squats, plank pulses, lunges, body rows, bent-over Y raises, and burpees. Participants are encouraged to go at their own pace and rest as needed.

Exhibit Hall

With over 10 years in San Diego, Firehouse World continues to deliver the latest developments in education and training—and this includes an exhibit hall featuring a range of products and technologies necessary to prepare firefighters of all ranks for the urban, rural and wildland challenges they face.
