Deputy Fire Commissioner Henry Costo recently retired from the Philadelphia Fire Department after 41 years. During that time he worked in the Division of Fire Prevention & Community Risk Reduction, the Fire Marshal’s Office, the Fire Communications Center, the Fire Code Unit and the Technical Support Unit. From January 2004 until his retirement, Costo was responsible for all phases of the management and administration of the department’s comprehensive personal protective equipment (PPE) program and is a nationally recognized fire service subject matter expert in PPE. He presently serves as an expert technical reviewer for the NIOSH Firefighter Fatality Investigation & Prevention program.
