The patient who had been shot by police was pronounced dead once he finally arrived at the hospital.

A shooting victim in cardiac arrest was being rushed to a hospital Wednesday afternoon when the D.C. ambulance broke down.

The man, a carjacking suspect, had been shot by police, according to WJLA.com.

Police said an officer, originally believed to have been shot, was wounded in the incident. But, they didn't say how he was hurt.

The carjacking victim flagged down officers, who later found the vehicle, the station reported.

The ambulance transporting the suspect broke down on I-295, and another had to be sent to continue the transport. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

It's not been determined if the delay affected the outcome.

The D.C. Fire and EMS Department has come under continued criticism in the past months after a police officer had to wait nearly 30 minutes for an ambulance.
