EMS personnel in the Bloxom Vol. Fire Co. ambulance suffered minor injuries.

A patient being transported in a Virginia ambulance is dead following a collision Monday on the Eastern Shore.

The crash in Keller, Va. involved an ambulance from Bloxom Vol. Fire Company and a transit bus.

Three EMS personnel in the ambulance were transported to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. All were later released, according to WMDT.

The Bloxom ambulance was traveling south, with lights and sirens activated, when the driver drove through the red light at the Wachapreague Road intersection, striking a 2013 Ford Star Transit bus. The ambulance lost control and overturned several times, police told reporters.

The driver, Peter Surran, 38, of Exmore and two other squad members suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. The bus driver was not hurt.

Authorities have not said whether Douglas R. McCready, 60, died of crash injuries or from previous medical issues.

Onancock Volunteer Fire Department and Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company responded to the crash. Virginia State Police continue to investigate.

More information will be posted when it becomes available.
