Hatteras Island Rescue Squad of Buxton, NC has placed this new patient
transport unit in service. The unit is a 2002 GMC 1-ton, 15-passenger van,
with a four-wheel-drive conversion by Quigley 4X4 of Pennsylvania. This is
replacing our 1990 Chevrolet Suburban.
Designated in Dare County as "Rescue 2", the unit is dispatched, along with a
medic unit from Dare County EMS and other rescue units, to medical and rescue
calls in areas that are not accessable with medic units such as beach or
wooded areas. The unit has had all but it's front seats and one bench seat
removed. The rear seats have been replaced with equipment storage and a
patient care area. The unit is equipped with oxygen cylinders, a suction
unit, BLS supplies, a raised patient care area, and an area for ALS equipment
brought onboard by Dare County Paramedics.
Once placed on a back board, the patient is secured into the patient care
area and is rendered care while being transported to a waiting medic unit.
