Chicago Firefighters Batlle Tanker Fire

Story/Photos By Steve Redick Fire Alarm Dispatcher CFD

A spectacular crash and fire on Chicago's Northwest side last night, January 6, 2002 about 2200 hours.

A tractor trailer tanker truck loaded with gasoline overturned and burst into flames. The driver escaped with moderate injuries.

Chicago sent a 2-11 alarm fire response and a level 2 haz mat response.

In addition the foam task force was summoned from nearby O'Hare field.

This task force consists of a full size crash rig, engine company and 2 piece squad unit.

The fire severely exposed an adjacent residence and funeral home business.

A tremendous problem with gasoline runoff was contained well by the haz mat unit using dike operations and explosive levels testing in the surrounding buildings.
