Investigators say a spectacular fire that roared through an industrial yard in South Gate caused an estimated $2.2 million in damage.
No one was hurt in the blaze, which broke out about 8:30 pm Friday night. It took nearly 150 firefighters and about four hours before the blaze was under control.
At its peak, the blaze sent clouds of thick smoke billowing into the sky and knocked out power to about 2,400 Edison customers. There's still no word on what caused the fire.
4-12-02 Firefighters have gained the upper hand on a huge industrial fire on the 10000 block of Karmont Avenue in South Gate.
The blaze broke out at about nine Friday night at a building on Karmont Avenue. Fire officials believe the blaze was being fueled by plastics, oil drums and perhaps propane tanks housed there.
Los Angeles County Fire Captain Brian Jordan says nearly 150 firefighters battled the fire that caused explosions and knocked out power to the surrounding area.
There were no immediate reports of injuries.
SoCal Edison says about 24-hundred customers in the South Bay area lost power for about an hour. About 400 customers in South Gate are still without power.
ABC7 Eyewitness News Reports indicate residents gathered outside on their darkened streets.
No word yet on what caused the fire.
