On Friday, April 12, 2002, at 1613, Winona, Kansas, and Wallace County Kansas, fire departments were called to a railroad car fire at the Logan and Wallace county line.
When first reported, the fire was small, but in the short time it took to get fire units there, the bridge was fully engulfed.
The fire deptartments fought the blaze back to allow railroad personel to unhook the un-involved cars and get them away.
The first collapse was on the east end, and happened around 1735, and by 1800 the bridge was fully collapsed.
Pictures show involvement upon arrival, the culprit car, which was on the west end, the first collapse, and the subsequent total collapse.
Two trucks remained on the scene until 300 the next morning to stand guard while crews cleared away debris to allow bridge rebuilding.
No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.
