VA Firefighters Perform Stabalization

Photos/Story By S. Meyers

On April 9, Norfolk firefighters arrived at an area Zero's Sub Shop to find an abandoned car supported by a utility pole guy-wire at a 40 degree angle in the pouring rain.

To make matters worst, the car was running and in reverse gear with the rear wheels turning just inches off the sidewalk.

Since the vehicle was off-centered supported by a single guy-wire and the bumper, SOP required stabilization before opening the door, the windows were up, to turnoff the ignition.

Squad 2 initially used cribbing to attempt to stabilize the vehicle, but the angle and height was too great.

Squad 1 was called to bring the low pressure air bags. Once stabilized, the driver's door was opened and the ignition turned off.

Norfolk Fire units Engine and Ladder 9 remained on scene until the wrecker and Virginia Power removed the car from the wire.
