Fire Rips Through Washington Grocery

Photos by Kelley Balcomb-Bartok

FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. (AP) -- A fire burned through a grocery store, restaurant, gift shop and two other businesses Thursday in this San Juan Islands town.

Volunteer firefighters, including some who arrived by boat, had the blaze under control by nightfall. There were no reports of any injuries, Mayor Gary Boothman said.

``We're really fortunate,'' Boothman said. ``It's a sad day, but it's not a tragedy.''

The businesses shared space in one building with the grocery.

The cause of the blaze wasn't immediately determined.

Friday Harbor is the main town on San Juan Island, the largest in the San Juan island chain off northwest Washington.
