Inferno Levels Nebraska Airport Hangar

Story by Mark Bonser
Photos by Doug Krueger

On Tuesday, May 14th, an inferno leveled a maintenance hangar leased by Great Lakes Aviation at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport Grand Island, Nebraska,

Two Great Lakes aviation planes were destroyed, valued at $4.5 million each.

Workers were installing a new bi-fold door to the hanger.

Nebraska State Fire Marshal Arson Investigator Chuck Hoffman states the cause of the fire is hot sparks from a workers torch made their way into void spaces in the 50-year-old wood structure that were fanned by high winds.

The hangar covered approximately 26,000 square feet.

The bow string truss construction roof had a complete and sudden collapse.

The fire went to three-alarm status.

There were no injuries reported.
