Ten recruits attending the Sacramento City Lateral Fire Academy at the former McClellan Air Force Base in California participated in a training burn June 18 as one of their last hands-on exercises before graduating.
The burn was held in rural Dixon, Calif., 15 miles south of Sacramento, where the recruits as well as four training officers and firefighters from throughout the Sacramento Fire Department practiced fire attack skills and roof operations during the day-long exercise.
The recruits, all with previous firefighting experience, are in their seventh of eight weeks at the academy, under the leadership of Capt. Jim Byers, having transferred to Sacramento from various cities throughout the state and Utah.
