KENTLAND VOLUTNEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

Shortly after 11 PM on July 13, 2002 units from Kentland were returning from a reported house fire in Landover Hills and a medical local in Landover. Mini-Pumper 33 came across a house fire at 7110 E. Lombard Street, just about 10 houses down from the firehouse.

Engine 332, Tower 33, Mini-Pumper 33, Chief 33A and Chief 33 responded. Upon arrival heavy fire conditions were seen on side three of the two and a half story duplex with basement. Initial fire conditions presented themselves on the first and second floor with extension into the cockloft.

As the attack was being made, a woman that lived at the house presented herself to command and advised that everyone was out of the house. As crews advanced to the second floor to conduct a search a child could be heard screaming from a rear bedroom.

Firefighters James Carpenter and Bryan Teague started their search and found a 10 year-old trapped child. Firefighter James Carpenter grabbed the child and removed him via the interior stairs to awaiting EMS personnel.

Crews now identified that there was fire extending to the exposure four, via the rear porches with civilians still in the exposure. Companies were then deployed to search and extinguish any fire there.

The crews from Kentland made good progress on the fire in the first and second floors and controlled the cockloft fire. Assisted by Engine Company 22 these units now found a progressing basement fire and controlled it from the rather tight and cramped interior stairs. All fire was knocked down and the incident deemed under control in about 20 minutes. Volunteer Chief 33 (Ricky Riley) was the Incident Commander. The child was transported to Prince George's General Hospital in good condition with smoke inhalation.
