MD Bravest Battle Fire at Recycling Facility

Story by & Photos by

Prince George's County Fire/EMS Dept.

Chapel Oaks, MD - Towards the end of a long day of extreme heat firefighters responded to a major fire at Smith's Recycling that may take days to fully extinguish. The blaze escalated to a two-alarm incident within the first half-hour bringing about 100 personnel to the scene. Smith's Recycling is located in the 2000 block of Kenilworth Avenue.

Although significant progress has been made since the 9:30 p.m. outbreak, the fire continues to burn. The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time. Damage estimates are not yet available. No injuries occurred as a result of the blaze.

Eastern Avenue is closed between Olive Street and Kenilworth Avenue due to water supply lines crossing the roadway. This is a major road closure for morning commuters. Many motorists use Eastern Avenue to connect with Route 295 and Route 50. This road closure will remain in effect until an adequate water supply can be maintained without an effect on Eastern Avenue.
