Johnston, RI Firefighters Battle RV Fire

Photos and Story by TOM CARMODY

On Monday August 12, 2002, at approximately 1500 hours, the Johnston, RI Fire Department dispatched Engines 4,3, Ladder 1, Rescue 3 and Car 3 to the area of 72 Winsor Avenue for the report of an RV fire. At the same time the Smithfield Fire Department was dispatching Engines 1 and 3 to the same address, Winsor Avenue runs through both towns in this area.

Smithfield Engine One arrived first and reported a large RV fully involved with extension to telephone and cable wires above and brush in the immediate area. Smithfield firefighters stretched an 1 3/4" line and began attacking the fire. Johnston apparatus arrived next and stretched another line into the fire.

The RV was carrying propane tanks but they never became involved in the fire.

The occupants of the the RV were able to escape with out injury and no firefighters were injured fighting the blaze. It took about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
